How High Roll Glyph plays: a full walkthrough

How High Roll Glyph plays: a full walkthrough

I've put together a video walking through how High Roll Glyph works and everything that's in it. If you'd rather read than watch, here's the short version.

The basics

You roll 10 letter dice, keep the letters you want, and re-roll the rest. You only get two rolls each turn, so it comes down to deciding what to keep and when to push your luck to finish a word.

Then you play your words on an 11 by 11 crossword-style board. Every word has to connect to the starting tile or to a word already on the board. You can play more than one word per turn, and you can extend existing words.

Any dice you don't use are burned at the end of the turn, and you get a fresh roll for the next one.

The dice

You get the same 10 dice every turn, but each die is different. They have unique letter layouts and are grouped into four tiers, which roughly match how difficult the letters are.

The little dots in the corner of each die show its tier. They do two jobs:

  • They give you bonus points when that die is used in a word
  • They help you quickly identify which die has which letters on it

The more you play, the more familiar you get with the layouts and what's available to you on a given turn. There are even vowels hiding on some of the harder dice, so pushing to complete a word can sometimes land you in strife.

Scoring

  • Each letter has a score value in its top right corner, based on how difficult the letter is
  • Your turn score is the total of every word you play, including existing words you extend
  • Letter and word multiplier spaces are scattered around the board
  • Tier bonus dots add to the final score

The goal is to make the most of your letters each turn and maximise your score in the fewest turns and the least time.

The dictionary

When you lock in your turn, the game validates your words. You can review definitions at any time, and there's a full history of the words you've played.

There are over 160,000 words in the dictionary, all loaded into the game itself, so it's fully playable offline. Long flights and camping trips with no reception are covered.

If you think a word should be included, or you're not comfortable with one that is, you can report it from the settings.

Game modes

There are four game modes right now, and I'm always working on new modes, mechanics and ways to play.

Standard

The same board layout every time. You play as many turns as you can and try to maximise your score in the shortest time. You can turn the clock off if you want to play more casually. Games average around 30 minutes, but it autosaves, so you can play a turn while you're waiting for a coffee and pick it up again later.

Daily Dice

The most popular mode. You get one turn and one attempt. Each day there's a new board layout and a pre-placed word that fits the month's theme. Every player gets the exact same board, the same starting word and even the same dice roll outcomes, so the daily leaderboard is a fair fight. Everyone who plays earns bonus experience points and bonus re-rolls for Standard and Challenge, with more rewards if you finish near the top or in the top 10.

Challenge

Plays like Standard over multiple turns, but every board is unique, with blocked tiles, pre-placed words and other mechanics. You earn medals to unlock further levels.

Multiplayer

Play against friends or match with other players openly. You pick the board layout and take turns playing your best score. You can piggyback off each other's words or try to block your opponent into areas where they can't score well. Invite codes let you set up specific games with friends.

Where to play

  • No account needed
  • Available on Android, iOS and Windows
  • Daily Dice is playable straight in your browser
  • No advertising and no microtransactions
  • Standard and Daily Dice are free to play

I'm really passionate about this game and I play it every single day. I hope you enjoy it.
