Syloria Devlog #4: Building a Fantasy World That Responds to Your Real Life โš”๏ธ๐ŸŒ™

The latest Syloria update is all about making your real-life actions feel meaningful inside the game. It's been a busy few weeks developing Syloria, and I've made some significant changes to how the game works.

When I first started building Syloria, the idea was relatively simple: create a fantasy RPG where your real-life activities help develop your character. Working out builds Strength. Reading builds Wisdom. Walking and exploring build Adventure. But as development has progressed, I've realised that simply rewarding those activities with experience points isn't enough.

I want Syloria to feel like an actual fantasy adventure, not just a habit tracker with an RPG theme. That's been the focus of this latest development phase.

โš”๏ธ Choose How You Complete Your Quests One of the biggest changes is how quests work. Previously, certain activities were more closely tied to progression than others. I've now redesigned the system so that Strength, Wisdom and Adventure can all advance the main story. When you begin a quest, you choose how you want to approach it. You might complete a workout to progress through Strength, read your current book to progress through Wisdom, or head outside for a walk to progress through Adventure. Whichever route you choose, your actions contribute to your journey through Syloria. This was an important change for me because I don't want players feeling forced to exercise when they'd rather read, or feeling that their reading doesn't contribute as much as their workouts. Some days you might feel like training. Other days you might want to curl up with a fantasy novel. Both should count. The idea is to give players the freedom to approach their adventure in a way that fits their real lives.

๐Ÿฐ Introducing the Academies Another major addition I'm working on is Syloria's Academy system. Players will be able to align themselves with one of three Academies, each representing a different approach to personal development.

Ironbound Academy โš”๏ธ For those drawn to Strength, resilience and physical development. Moonveil Academy ๐Ÿ“– For those who value Wisdom, knowledge and learning. Wingbound Academy ๐ŸŒฒ For those who seek Adventure, exploration and discovery. Your Academy will help shape your experience within Syloria, including the objectives and challenges you encounter. Importantly, choosing an Academy won't lock you into one discipline. Someone from Moonveil can still train and explore. An Ironbound player can still progress through reading. The Academies are about identity and direction, rather than restricting how you play. I'm also exploring a class system where your character's development reflects the activities you actually complete. The idea is that, over time, Syloria begins to recognise the kind of adventurer you're becoming.

๐Ÿ“œ Making Your Journey Feel Personal One of the features I've been particularly excited about is the Chronicle. Rather than simply showing a list of completed workouts, books and walks, the Chronicle brings your activities together as part of your character's ongoing story. I've been working on making this feel like a personalised fantasy narrative while still giving players a useful record of their real-world progress. For example, your weekly Chronicle might reflect the training you've completed, the books you've been reading and the adventures you've undertaken. I want players to be able to look back over their week and see more than statistics. I want them to see the journey they've been on.

๐ŸŒ™ Improving the Look and Feel of Syloria Alongside the gameplay changes, I've continued refining the interface. Syloria has always been intended to feel like a modern fantasy storybook, and I've been working to bring more of that identity into the individual screens. The Wisdom section has received particular attention. Since fantasy readers are a major part of Syloria's audience, I want logging a book to feel like a natural part of the adventure rather than filling out a form. I've also been refining the Adventure interface, Journal and general navigation. A lot of this work involves small details, such as typography, colours, animations and how buttons respond when pressed. They might seem minor individually, but together they make a big difference to how the app feels.

๐Ÿงช Testing, Bugs and the Less Glamorous Side of Development Of course, not everything has been artwork and new features. A significant amount of time has gone into testing Syloria on a physical iPhone, improving reliability and fixing issues uncovered during development. I've been working through authentication, account creation, activity rewards, quest progression and the systems responsible for keeping character progress accurate. I've also been preparing the subscription system for the eventual public release. Syloria is being developed independently, so I'm balancing the more exciting creative work with the less visible technical work required to make everything reliable. It's not always the most interesting part of development, but it's essential.

โœจ What's Next? My main priority now is bringing all these systems together into a compelling first experience. I want someone opening Syloria for the first time to understand what makes it different. Not just that they can earn XP for exercising or reading, but that their actions are helping them progress through a fantasy world. The first Frontier, quest encounters, Academy identity and narrative progression all need to work together to deliver that feeling. There's still plenty to build and refine, but the direction is becoming much clearer.

Syloria is evolving from an RPG-inspired activity tracker into a fantasy adventure powered by real life. That's always been the ambition, and it's exciting to see the pieces starting to come together. If you're interested in fantasy books, RPGs or making everyday self-improvement feel a little more adventurous, I'd love to hear what you think.
