Rings Encore
Until now, it's been very difficult to figure out how many rings a board should have. I've built the game around a modular board engine, and essentially any number of players can play on a board of any size. So what's the right number of rings to hold in your hand? What's the right number to have during a game?
I think all this time I was approaching it from the wrong angle. See, I thought I'd land on a magical number, or tweak it based on board size to find something fun.
But now that I have a digital engine online, and I'm not developing with a physical prototype anymore, I'm actually able to create more interesting rules. So I've just created a new one:
The game ends when no more stacks can be scored.
That's very dynamic. It's based on player placement and can't be predicted, and it turns the game into a knife fight all the way until the end. There are also some really fun but really punishing moments where you have to self-eliminate, and it's really great.
I just shipped it on web. I'm still waiting on Apple to approve the iOS version, since this is the first time I've shipped in-app purchases (for the unlockable characters). I'll keep you posted either way.
It's a lovely update, and I hope you go and try it out.
