From Tiny Steps to Flying Shroomingz

Shroomingz started with a simple idea: a group of tiny mushroom creatures trying to escape a world that has become far too salty. The first prototype contained one handcrafted tutorial level. The Shroomingz walked automatically, and the player placed a spore cloud to help them survive a dangerous fall. The twist was already there: spores grant useful abilities, but they also make every affected Shrooming faster. A helpful cloud placed too early can therefore ruin the entire solution. Since then, the prototype has grown into a small playable campaign. Shroomingz can now change direction, use their caps as umbrellas, spin like helicopters, ride horizontal winds, squeeze through narrow tunnels, climb slopes and bounce off walls. Each ability has consequences, and timing matters because only one cloud can be active at a time. The levels are built from functional tiles, while their appearance is generated when they load. Layers of roots grow across dark soil, flowers cast colored light, salt drains color from its surroundings, and decorative elements hide the underlying grid. Restarting keeps the same scenery, but loading the level again can create a different-looking cave. I also built two Windows tools: a tile-based level editor and a scenery editor for tweaking root growth, colors, lighting, flowers, salt influence and other procedural effects. The campaign now has five levels, a proper start menu, saved progress, atmospheric procedural music and collectible mushroom versions of familiar internet memes. The narrator, “Your Mind,” offers advice while repeatedly reminding you not to trust it. The latest work focused on mobile input. Spore clouds now follow the finger smoothly across the entire playfield. I also fixed an Android touch issue where a cloud could snap back to an old position after releasing the screen. Shroomingz currently runs on Windows, Android and in the browser. There is still plenty to improve, but the core loop is finally taking shape: observe the route, distrust Your Mind, place the right spores and try to keep six tiny mushrooms alive. Sometimes it only takes 135322 tries.
