About this game
Late Innings puts you in the dugout of real MLB games. You take over at the moment the real manager had to decide, with the real lineups, and you make every call from there to the final out.
It plays in your phone's browser. There's no app to install. It also works on a computer.
How a game works
- At the plate, you call each at-bat that has a choice: swing away, steal, bunt, squeeze, hit-and-run, pinch-hit or pinch-run.
- In the field, you stay with your pitcher, go to the bullpen, walk the batter or bring the infield in.
- Each call is graded before the result, in points of win chance against the best option: Right call, Close, Costly or Big mistake. A good call that fails still grades well, and a lucky one doesn't.
- When the game ends, you see what the real manager did and how the real game finished. Your game can go differently, because everything after the starting moment is simulated from the players' real rates.
Ways to play
- Daily: one new game a day, the same for everyone, with a result you can share. A challenge link gives a friend your game with the same dice.
- Pennant Race: 900 late, close regular-season games from 2023-25, back to back. Wins make the spots tougher, and three losses end the run.
- Your team: pick any of the 30 teams for a run of only their games, 41 to 67 of them.
- Older seasons: practice games from the 1988 and 2015-22 postseasons, with each season's own league rates and rules.
Where the numbers come from
Game situations, lineups and player ratings come from Retrosheet play-by-play. Benches and bullpens are approximated from who appeared around that game. The model's win chances are within 3 points of real 2015-25 game outcomes in the 7th through 9th innings. Calls a point apart can reasonably be argued either way, and every grade has a link to tell me why it's wrong.

AI disclosure
Late Innings was built with Claude Code, Anthropic's AI coding assistant. It wrote most of the game code and the data pipeline under the developer's direction, and helped draft in-game text and marketing copy. The logo, banner and icon are drawn by that code. Screenshots and clips are real gameplay. The game has no generative AI images, audio or video, and no AI runs while you play: grades come from a win-probability model built from Retrosheet data.
