Old Woods

Old Woods is an illustrated text RPG built from Romanian folk tales, played in your phone's browser a few minutes a day. Nothing to download: add it to your home screen and it opens like an app. You can try it before signing up.

A river runs through old woods, each with its village and its guardian. You hunt in the woods, grow stronger, and face each wood's guardian to open the next. The monsters come straight from Romanian folklore: the balaur, the zmei, the ielele dancing in the clearings, the Mother of the Forest.

What you do

• New turns come at every dawn: hunt, mend at the healer, rest at the inn
• Court someone at the inn, marry, raise a hatchling from an egg
• Write letters to other players, join a clan, duel, chat in the village square
• Stand with the whole river when a beast besieges it

What makes it different

• The world is a poor Romanian village of the early 1800s, and the feast days of the village year come round on their own dates
• Every place has its own picture, by day and by night
• Three endings in the first telling of the tale, four more in the second, where every guardian comes back changed
• Free, no ads, and nothing you can buy makes you stronger: money buys only looks
