Game Description

Tap, tap, action. Two players share one beat in this fast paced strategy game.

Charge is a digital version of the clap-clap hand game from early-2000s Singapore playgrounds. The one you and a friend played on the school bus, where you clap twice and both throw a move on the third beat. It was never written down, so every school played it differently. This is one interpretation of it, at 90 BPM, in a progressively evolving singleplayer or against a friend.

The four-beat loop

Four beats, at 90 beats per minute, land your action before your rival outsmarts you:

  • Tap.
  • Tap.
  • Action. Choose from an array or attacks or defences.
  • Resolve. Both actions play out. If nobody is down, the loop continues. Miss the beat and you may be left without any actions.

Charge is the currency

Accumulate charges by tapping the drum on the beat. Charging unlocks more powerful attacks but also leaves you wide open. A higher charged attack beats lower charged ones. Defences are free, but you have to predict what your opponent will throw!

The rhythm mind games

Your rival has 1 charge. Are they going to charge again, or throw a Gun? Now they have 2. Are they going to Gun twice, or reach for the Grenade?

You have about a second to decide. All while grooving to the beat.

Tracks

  • Solo Tour. Rise through the ranks as you unlock your arsenal and face more challenging rivals.
  • Play online. Real two-player duels over a private room, or public matchmaking. Rivals scores are tracked across sessions so you can maintain your bragging rights!
  • Ticket book to flaunt your mastery of the game. Collect retro arcade tickets to boast to your friends.
  • Groove to different BGMs.
  • Free, runs in the browser, installable to a phone home screen.

Controls

Tap the drum on the first two beats, or press Space. On ACTION: Space to Charge, 1 - 4 for attacks, Q and E for defences.

Best in portrait on a phone, but it plays fine on a laptop.

This is one interpretation of a game that never had a rulebook. Some of us remember guns and grenades. Some remember Hadouken and sonic booms. Some remember earthquakes and psychic and dig and fly. If you grew up playing a different version, I'd like to hear it. There's a feedback option inside the game.
