Dots and Boxes Offline

You've probably played Dots and Boxes on the back of a notebook. Take turns drawing a line between two dots. Close the fourth side of a box and it's yours, and you draw again. Whoever owns more boxes at the end wins.

The computer has three levels. Easy plays loose, so it's a good place to learn. Medium always takes what you give it and won't hand you a box while it has a safe line. Hard counts chains and loops near the end, and it knows when to leave you two boxes so it keeps control. It uses the same lines you do, nothing hidden, and it can be beaten.

Boards come in 3x3, 4x4 and 5x5. A 3x3 game takes about a minute. On 5x5 the endgame gets long and the chain counting really matters.

You can also pass the phone to a friend: circles against squares, each in its own colour. Tap anywhere close to a line and it lights up, then it's drawn when you let go.
